Education

Human Service Trust- Zambia opened a Primary School in the year of 2000 at its farm in Makeni, Lusaka, to provide free education along with free text books, exercise books and stationery etc. This was provided to the children of underprivileged farm workers and orphans from surrounding areas. In the beginning, it started with 40 children and 2 teachers in a makeshift shed, as it did not have any proper structure for the school nor adequate funds for building. However in keeping in view of its motto, “Service to Man is Service to God” , the plight of the children in the area and its zeal went ahead at a very modest scale.

The turning point, however, was a donation of GBP 8,500 from a UK based charity, organized by Mr. David Crossweller, whose visit was organized by Mr. Prem Kuleen of Satya Sai Education Trust, Zambia. This single donation proved to be the first step for a thousand miles journey for Human Service Trust in the direction of free education to deprived Zambian children in the area. The work on a 5 class room block started immediately and was completed in the year of 2002 with some more donations from local well-wishers.

With the success of the school in terms of providing education to the deprived Zambian community and the response from the well-wishers, Human Service Trust was inspired to raise more money to expand the school to a total of 8 class rooms, 1 library, 2 rooms for the head mistress and staff, and 2 ablution blocks to cater for  about 350 pupils.

The Human Service Trust School offers free education from Grade 1 through Grade 7. So far, 7 batches of grade 7 have completed and the pass results for all the 7 years have been 100%, which is very rare in Zambia and hence a matter of great pride for the people associated with the school.

Recurrent Cost of School:

At present, there are 8 teachers, 1 guard and 3 gardeners and there are 327 pupils including  180 girls and 85 orphans. Its annual running cost is ZMK 240,000,000 equivalent to US$ 48,000.

Future Plans:
Human Service Trust has a plan to establish a Vocational Training Centre for the students completing their studies at Human Service Trust Primary School and elsewhere, who are unable to pursue their further education at the University of Zambia due to financial constraints. It will include trades like carpentry, bricklaying, plumbing, welding, sewing, shoe making etc. It has marked the area for the purpose adjacent to its Primary School. Vocational training will provide necessary skills in various fields to enable its graduates to earn their living with dignity and to contribute in the national development. The estimated cost of the project is USD  100,000.
